TBS is a program for parents with children at risk for hospitalization or high-level placement due to severe behavior problems. It also serves those youth who are transitioning from a higher to a lower level of placement when prior behavior problems are likely to prevent a successful transition. A trained Behavioral Specialist teaches youth better coping skills and models effective parenting skills for caregivers. Caregivers may be biological relatives or foster parents. Additionally, in group home or residential settings, TBS works with childcare workers and the youth residing there. Services are intense but short-term and supplement ongoing therapy. Treatment is available for youth up to age 21 who have full-scope Medi-Cal. A TBS referral may be made by any DMH-contracted provider (within or outside our agency) who is currently providing therapy for the youth.
